Why Your Role Matters More Now Than Ever

The necessity of spending your health care and human capital budgets cost-effectively has never been greater. The need to control medical spending and to enhance the productivity of an aging workforce has never been greater. The proliferation of tools has never been greater.

Unfortunately, the scrutiny of your budget has never been greater, creating a major career risk. Feeding into that career risk is a minefield of ways to lose your company’s investment and damage your reputation -- by contracting with carriers, vendors, and consultants who can’t do the job and/or can’t measure their outcomes and/or are simply telling you what you want to hear instead of the truth. Consider:

  • The industry trade association, the Care Continuum Alliance (better known by its previous name, the Disease Management Association of America), publishes widely followed “consensus guidelines” that they know to be provably mathematically certain to overstate outcomes
  • The major carriers knowingly offer guarantees and outcomes that dramatically overstate program impact
  • At great expense to you, the major benefits consulting firms often “validate” savings that in reality would have been mathematically impossible to achieve. (Predictive Modeling News recently highlighted such an example perpetrated by Mercer Management Consulting.)
  • Wellness vendors routinely overstate savings so dramatically that HC2 advisors have created a “wishful thinking multiplier” (defined as: claimed savings/claimed risk reduction) to display them. At least two wellness vendors, Trestletree (300%) and US Corporate Wellness (230%), have claimed reductions in absenteeism well in excess of the mathematical 100% limit for reductions in anything

Membership in HC2 will raise your metrics literacy to the highest levels in the industry…and keep it there even as the complexity of your job continues to increase. You will be able to distinguish the valid from the invalid, push back against phony metrics while welcoming quality vendors…and, most importantly, be able to promote and defend your strategies and outcomes to the highest levels within your organization. You’ll be able to address the economic and productivity promise and pitfalls of:

  • Wellness
  • Disease Management
  • On-Site Medical Clinics
  • Medication Therapy Management and “Gaps in Care”
  • Absenteeism/Presenteeism Management
  • Care Coordination Programs
  • Patient-Centered Medical Homes
  • Any other program where hard outlays are offset with claims of savings (“value-based” programs)

Don’t just take our word for it. (One of the early learnings in HC2 is, never take anyone’s word for anything – only you have your organization’s agenda in mind.) Instead, consider our guarantees.
