Wellness Meets Superman: Health Fitness Corporation Achieving Savings by Making the World Spin Backwards

Intelligent Design Awards are lovingly bestowed upon those contributions to the population health field that most set back the evolution of outcomes measurement, thanks to a unique and usually hilarious combination of dishonesty and cluelessness. But there is a serious lesson here: Engineers say that more is learned from a single bridge which collapses than from 100 which stay up. The good news is, that means there is not just a lesson here but an entire curriculum, because as it turns out, every bridge in wellness falls down. Yes, every single wellness outcome which has been made public is made up.

As the display shows (compare baseline years 2004 and 2005), Health Fitness Corp's program for Eastman Chemical started saving significant money even before the program started, which is only possible one of two ways. The first is by hiring Superman to make the world spin backwards. The second is to simply divide the population into participants and non-participants, and watch the former outperform the latter even without a program. Obviously (or at least obviously to everyone except Eastman Chemical, who paid for this), if you compare a bunch of motivated volunteers to a bunch of unmotivated non-participants, the former will outperform the latter.
